Deadline DQ Chap 11-Epilogue

Eleven

1. How does Hey-soos put things in perspective for Ben? How
does he make him feel better about his decision to “change”?

- Hey-soos put life like a video game. He said that he shouldn’t give up and keep trying to stay in the game.

2. What does Ben say his “change” in behavior is attributed
to when speaking with his father?

- He’s more focused on life.

Twelve

3. What point was made during the book burning?

- The point is that you can do what ou want, but you cant control everything. There are some things that you cant stop from happening. You just have to live with what you got and not let it bother you.

4. What does Ben plan to do at the end of the season? Why?

- He’s planning on telling everybody about his illness, because if he tell them now, then he have to burden himself with all of thei responses so he just want to wait till the last minute.

Thirteen

5. What is another “truth” we learn about Dallas?

- That Joe Henry was her son that she had with her uncle when she was thirteen.

6. How did Ben lie to her?

- He told her that he would be around, when he knows that he’s dying.


Fourteen

7. How does Ben convince Mr. Lambeer to allow him to do the
Malcolm X project? How does Dallas support him?

- By telling him about racism and that he doesn’t care if he fail the class as long as he get to do the project that he chose, and he’s planning on doing ti anyway. She help her by saying that Ben might be small but he’s a lot smater than his look.


Fifteen

8. Why does Rudy push Ben away? Why did Rudy join the
priesthood? What “secret” does Rudy have? How does this
explain his drug abuse. Why do you think he told Ben his secret?
How does Ben react?

- Rudy’s afraid to get close to Ben and that’s why he pushed Ben away. Rudy is gay, and he thinks that if he stay closer to God, then he’ll be fine. He also used to be a child molester and he use drug to get away from reality. He told Ben his secret, so that if things got a little weird, he’ll know what to do. It’s also because it makes him feel better to talk about it.

9. What does Ben think of his new therapist? What does he
assign Ben?

- Ben thinks that the new therapist is not really good, and besides he looks too young to help anybody. The therapist made Ben list all the things that he likes to do.

Sixteen

10. How has the conflict increased between Lambeer and Ben?
Why doesn’t Ben care about the consequences of his actions?

- Lambeer change his mind saying that Ben cant do his project again, but Ben’s still going to do it no matter what. Lambeer said that he wont be nice about the situation anymore.



Seventeen

11. Why does Ben go back to Rudy’s? How does this conflict
with his relationship with Dallas? What is Rudy contemplating?

- Ben trusted him. He thinks that Rudy wont hurt him. This situation make it hard for Ben to be truthful to Dallas

12. What did Ben get from Coach upon talking about his
girlfriend Becky?

- That he had been really selfish for keeping his secret and that he only think about himself and it’s not fair for the people that he loves.

13. How has it “started”?

- When he run, he can feel that his energy is drifting away from him.
Eighteen

14. What does Hey-Soos mean when he says “experience is
the only teacher”? Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Explain.

- I agree, because you need to have an experience to learn from your mistake, it’s your best teacher.

15. Who does Ben tell first? Why do you think he chose this
person to tell first out of all the others he has to tell?

- He told his therapist first. But the first person that he told in his regular life is the coach. He told the coach, because he used to have the almost same problem when his girlfriend died. And he’s like a second dad to Ben.
Nineteen

16. How did Dallas respond to the news? Do you agree with
her response?

- She shut Ben out by saying that she never wants to see him again. I agree, because it’s not funny to lie to people. But she need to deal with the situation instead of running away from it.

17. What progress has Ben made on his project? How is the
community reacting? Be specific.

- He tried to get people sign the paper but nobody did, except one person told him that if he can get other signatures, then he’ll sign it too. The community looks at him like he’s fooling himself for even thinking about it.
Twenty

18. How does Cody respond to the news? How is his response
different from Dallas’?

- He said that he’s 100% with Ben and that he’ll do whatever he can to help him. He face the situation insed of running away from it.

19. What tragedy occurs in this chapter? What advice was
given? How does Ben react?

- Rudy comitted suicide. He told Ben that he should just keep going and be brave. Ben felt sad but feels relieft at the same time.
Twenty-One

20. Who has a deeper reaction to Ben’s news, his mother or
father? Explain using specific details from the book.

- His mother, because she wont even came out of the room and it’s way past time for her depression. She took it pretty hard. His dad took it hard too, but he’s the man of the house so he’s dealing with it.
Twenty-Two

21. Describe the argument between Lambeer and Ben. How is
it resolved? Use many details from the novel.

- Lambeer have enough of this argument about the project and he yelled at Ben infront of the whole class. Ben told the whole class that he’s dying and everybody’s in shock except Cody, who laugh, because he already knows what’s going on.
Twenty-Three

22. What tragedy occurred in the beginning of the chapter?
How is this symbolic?

- Sooner got killed in a car accident. It symbolized that death is near for Ben.
Twenty-Four

23. How has Ben’s condition worsened? What are some signs
of his upcoming death?

- He got a lot weaker and skinnier. He doesn’t get out much anymore and there’s a big chance that he’s not going to make it to graduation.

24. Why does Ben go to Mr. Cowan’s home? What did Mr.
Cowan tell him?

- He wants to make sure that Mr. Cowan is alright and that he shouldn’t blame himself for what happen to Sooner. Mr. Cowan tells him that he he’s sorry for breaking Sooner’s collorbone and that he would like Sooner to know that.

25. Who makes a surprise visit at the end of the chapter? Why
do you think she comes back?

- Marla, Ben’s old therapist, came back because she wants to say that she’s sorry for leaving him when he needed her the most.
Epilogue

26. What are Ben’s words to the graduating seniors?

- He wants to thanks everyone for giving him the best year of his life.

27. What does the future look like for Dallas and Cody?

- They got scholarship to the same college in sports and they are moving in together. Their future looks really good fot them.

Deadline DQs Chapter 1-10

One
1. How is the narrator not like the average senior?

-He foun out that he only have one year to live, so that gave him courage to do stuff.
2. What has put a damper on his plans?

-he only have one year to live, and he knows it.
3. Describe his parents and the relationship between his parents.
Give specific details from the novel.

-His mom is an alcoholic and his dad doesn’t really do anything to help. However, his dad is very loyal and keeps his promises, so he didn’t get a divorce with his wife.
4. What decision has Ben made that angers Doc Wagner?

-Ben decided not to tell his parents about his illness.
5. What is Ben’s attitude toward dying? If you received Ben’s news,
how would you react?

-He pretend like everything’s fine and live his life to the fullest.

6. Why is Ben trying out for Football and not Cross Country? What
do you think about his decision?

-Cody was on the football team, so he have the advantage, besides he’s good at running. He’s small, so nobody expects him to play football. I think that it’s ironic, because he’s a really good runner, so he should try out for cross country instead of football, but he did the exact oposite.

7. Who is Marla Dawson? What does Ben think of her?

-Marla is Ben’s doctor and his “compromise”.
8. Why does he feel he is betraying his family?

-He didn’t tell his family about his illness and that made him feel guilty.
9. What is significant about Ben’s dream?

-He talk to Hey-soo like a real person, but he was in a dream instead of the real world, and they talk about what they’re going to do with ben’s life.

10. Compare Coach to Ben. What are at least two similarities
between the two?

-Coach is all about how big you are, but Ben is more about how you think. Ben only have one year to live and he knows it, so that makes him live like it’s his last moment.
11. How did Ben make an impression on Dallas? What does he
attribute his “forwardness” to?

-He talks to her and makes her think that he’s cool. He have more strength to do what he wanted to do from day one, because he only have a year to live.

12. Who is Sooner? What is he like?

-Sooner’s the guy on the football team. He’s a bully to everybody, except Cody, because Cody’s the QB of the football team.
13. What does Ben do to try and boost his “celestial resume”?
Why?

-he tried to go against the “senioritis” grain, because he thinks that they didn’t prepare them enough for the real world.
14. How did Ben’s date with Dallas go? How was it different
from an ordinary date?

-The date went out great, because he’s going to homecoming dance with her. The date wasn’t like an ordinary date, because Dallas interviewed him for the school’s paper instead of the usual talk.

15. How do Marla and Ben seem to “connect”?

-They both have to see therapy.
16. What is Ben thinking by the lake at the end of the chapter?

-He feels like he’s already dead, and he doesn’t have any idea if he got closer to Dallas or just farther apart.
Seven
17. What secret does Rudy slip to Ben? What is the
significance?

-Ruby used to be a Catholic priest, but he wont let anyone else know anout it. So they kind of share a secret in a way.
18. What happened to Sooner? How do you think it happened?
How do the plans change?

-He got beat up by his dad and now he cant play football anymore. His dad probably hit him hard or something. One spot is missing on the team so they have to fill up that spot and shange the game plan.

19. What trick does Cody pull at the end of the game? How
was it successful?

-He put Ben on the open spot and pass the ball to him. They pretend that he was a bad catcher at first, and then they fooled them at the end of the game.
Nine
20. The theme of secrecy has appeared several times in the
novel so far. What is Dallas’s secret? What does this mean for
Ben’s secret?

-Dallas was raped by her uncle. And now Ben might be tempted to share his secret with her.
Ten
21. The theme of connections comes up again at breakfast the
morning after the Homecoming Dance. How does this theme
appear with Ben’s father?

-He wants to let Ben and his mom talk about sexual stuff, because he’s not really good at that kind of talk.
22. What does Ben propose for his Civics Project? Why does he
do this?

-He’s doing his project on Malcolm X. he wants equallity among the people.
23. What happens with Marla? Explain the metaphor with the
oxygen mask.

-She left, because she cant take it anmore. The oxygen mask is the healing process for both of them, but Marla tried to help Ben before she help herself. So she’s saying that she cant do it anymore. She’s soppose to help herself first.
